Selected work

What we’ve modelled. What we’re modelling next.

AVEX GRID was founded in 2025. Our portfolio is intentionally small while we build it. Below is a mix of academic case work that demonstrates technical depth, and the engagement formats we’re actively taking on now. We’ll publish anonymised client work as it commissions.

01 Dissertation case studies

Where the engineering capability is documented.

The founder’s 118-page MSc dissertation modelled three Zimbabwean industrial cases in ETAP. The full document is available on request under NDA. Abstracts below.

CASE 01 · MINING

11 kV switchroom arc-flash & protection re-coordination, simulated mill expansion

Load-flow and short-circuit re-validation against a new 22 MVA transformer following hypothetical mill capacity uplift. ETAP-modelled IEEE 1584 arc-flash incident energy across 14 switchgear locations. Outcome: 6 settings changes, 2 relay replacements, PPE category re-grade.

  • ETAP load flow + short circuit
  • IEEE 1584-2018 arc flash
  • Stamped ZWS-compliant labels
CASE 02 · MANUFACTURING

Power-quality forensics on a 33 kV beverage line with repeated VFD failure

Class A monitoring per IEC 61000-4-30, harmonic analysis to IEEE 519, root-cause traced to upstream rectifier load on shared 33 kV feeder. Mitigation: passive harmonic filter sized and modelled. THD modelled down from 11.4% to 3.2%.

  • IEC 61000-4-30 monitoring
  • IEEE 519 compliance assessment
  • Filter sizing & placement
CASE 03 · IPP CONNECTION

Grid-code compliance study for a 12 MWp PV plant connecting to ZETDC at 33 kV

Steady-state, transient, and reactive-capability simulation. Voltage and frequency ride-through assessed against the 2024 Grid Code. Inverter Q-V curves modelled. Outcome: connection approved on first ZETDC review with two reactive-compensation recommendations.

  • Grid Code 2024 compliance
  • Q-V curve modelling
  • Connection study report
Full dissertation available under NDA. 118 pages, single-bound. Includes raw ETAP outputs, single-line diagrams, monitor logs, and the academic supervisor’s assessment. Request via inquiries@avexgrid.com.
02 Engagements we’re taking on now

The work currently being scoped or executed.

We publish active engagement formats here rather than client names, until each project commissions and we have written permission to disclose.

ACTIVE · Q2 2026

Investment-grade energy audit, Norton industrial site

Full electrical + thermal scope ahead of NEEP 2025 intensive-user filing. Site visits underway; draft report due Q3 2026. IPMVP M&V plan to follow.

ACTIVE · Q2 2026

Bankable feasibility, 12 MWp captive PV + 5 MWh BESS, Midlands

DFI-grade feasibility pack. P50/P90 yield, LCOE, DSCR coverage, technical risk register. Lender meeting Q3 2026.

SCOPING

Arc-flash & protection coordination, two SMC substations

Stamped IEEE 1584 deliverable with full re-validation against 132 kV ZETDC feeder fault levels. Awaiting drawing access.

SCOPING

Branch-network energy audit, 27 retail sites

Portfolio walkthrough audit with prioritised retrofit list. RFQ stage.

03 What we’re looking for

The engagements that fit our practice best.

Mid-sized industrial sites, 200 kVA–10 MW

Where a careful engineering hand makes a measurable difference. Single-site or small portfolios.

Captive solar & IPP feasibility, USD 200 k–10 m

Below USD 200 k a feasibility study isn’t economic. Above USD 10 m you probably need a Big Four engineering team alongside us.

Forensic / dispute work

Power-quality investigations, failure analyses, expert-witness reports. Independent, defensible, written for non-engineers.

Owner’s engineer on captive-power capex

Sitting on the client side of an EPC contract. Ideal scope: USD 500 k–5 m projects with a single EPC counterparty.

Have a project for our next case study?

Most of our best work happens because someone emailed us with a problem they couldn't define. Start there.
